ONE PAGE ACADEMIC REPORTS MLA STYLE

There are many different formats for reports.  Academic reports, however, are usually formatted in the MLA style(Modern Language Association) style.  To format a report in MLA style:

  1. Use a 1 inch top, bottom and side margins.
  2. Double space the entire report, including the heading.
  3. Use New Times Roman or Calibri font size 11 or 12. (for entire paper, heading and title)
  4. Key in the heading (your name, class paper is for and grade, date) at the left margin (left aligned)
  5. Center and key the title with initial capital letters for each important word (  The Life of Joe Cool)
  6. Indent each paragraph 5 spaces...or 1 tab key.
NOTES FOR WORD 2007 users:
  • The default (automatic) settings for 2007 are calibri 11 pt. font, and 1.5 spacing.
  • You need to change the spacing to 2
  • You will need to remove the extra spacing that 2007 puts between paragraphs. Anytime you hit the enter key it assumes you want a new paragraph and adds more space than is set.  You do this by keying in the entire report and then selecting all of your text, going to the home tab, paragraph group, spacing command, and choose "remove space after paragraph".
  • finally, be sure to use the spell check and grammar check before printing...read over it for other errors...and make sure it follows the directions for MLA style!
